The September Grand Sumo Tournament or Akibasho finished in the Kokugikan Palace on September 25th, Sunday. The tournament ended very competitively where Mongolian Yokozuna Hakuho took the top division championship with a 13-2 record for his 20th Makuuchi Division title.
Receiving the 20th Cup of the Grand Sumo Tournament makes the Yokozuna Hakuho with a new upgrade title as the Dai Yokozuna or Grand Champion, who is eligible to establish an arena under his name Hakuho after quitting the wrestling. But in the terms of Sumo Association, the wrestler or oyakata who is eligible to establish an arena must be a citizen of Japan, thus if Hakuho decides to be an oyakata he should change his citizenship. According to his upgraded title the Dai Yokozuna, reporters asked him for his future plan, but he replied that he had not decided yet. On the other hand, his father
Mongolian National Wrestling Grand Champion J.Munkhbat also was questioned by reporters and said “It is too early to talk about of quitting wrestling and the issue to become or not to become an oyakata”.
The 68th Yokozuna Asashoryu who stopped wrestling in 2010 also had the opportunity to establish an arena under his name, but Asashoryu didn’t want to change his citizenship and returned to Mongolia. In the Grand Sumo Tournament History, wrestlers who achieved 20 or more times in Makuuchi Division have been only SIX wrestlers, whereas two of them are Mongolians. These grand wrestlers are Taiho Koki (32 times), Chiyonofuji Mitsugu (31), Asashoryu Akinori (25), Kitanoumi Katsuaki (24), Takanohana Koji (22) and Hakuho Sho (20).
