Geography
The aimag is bordered with Bayantsagaan, Bayan, Bayanjargal sums of Tuv aimag to the north, with  Delgerkhaan and Darkhan sums of Khentii aimag to the east and north east, with Bayanjargalan, Tsagaandelger, Govi-Ugtaal sums of Dundgovi aimag to the west and southwest. The aimag is situated in steppe region with small hills and mounds. The highest point is elevated at 1,620m above sea level.

Meteorology
The climate is dry and chilly in here. The coldest temperature in winter is about -33°C; highest in summer is appr. +32°C. Annual precipitation is 200 to 250mm, which is higher than the average gobi zone rate. Average temperature in January is below -10°C, in July is below +10°C, annual average air temperature is below +15°C and annual absolute high temperature is below +35°C. Average snow fall in winter times is below 100mm. Between November 21 and March 15 the area is covered with permanent snow. The highest recorded speed of the wind was 25m/sec. Average number of days without wind was 22 days a year. Average speed of wind in northern parts of the aimag is 2-4m/sec, northwest is 4-6 m/sec. The number if generally cold days a year is 95 to 122, warm days 80 to 100.

Soil
The region has umber and fair brown steppe soil.

Rivers and Lakes
There are 43 watercourse, springs and headwaters with constant has a constant flow whole year around such as Khulgar, Uulzvar, Tsoorkhoi, Khukhee, Tsagaan Us, Ust Khanan and Shivee in this aimag.

Flora
Stipa and caragana bush are widely found in northwestern parts and saltwort, straw are found in southwestern parts of the aimag.

Fauna
About 100 wild sheep, 10 mountain goats graze around Choirin Bogd and Sansar mountains as of recent statistics. Groups of 4 to 8 black tailed gazelles, and groups of 50 to 300 white antelopes totaling 6,000, live in Khalzangiin Govi, Khuren Dukh, Bayankhoshuuny Govi, Nukhen Sonduul and Togoogiin Bulag as of the research staistics made in 2000. The number of steppe marmots are average as the coefficient is 42 for a hectare. Birds like steppe eagle, buzzard, hawk, harrier, owl, and rare birds like golden eagle, falcon live in rock cliffs of the aimag.

Other information
The aimag has many historically and environmentally significant places like Tsoorkhoi spring surrounded with high rock cliffs, that is famous for its highly curative effects, is listed as locally protected area, Choiryn Bogd mountain is home to a endangered species like wild sheep and mountain goat, ancient ruins of Zuun Choir Buddhist temple and man stone monuments belonging to Turkic era.
