Mongolia was listed in 58th with 1,884 points on the "Global Peace Index 2012" released by the Institute for Economics and Peace together with the Economist Intelligence Unit Company from the UK. 
The points given on the number of internal wars fought and current active foreign policy of the certain countries are taken into the consideration to rank the countries’ peacefulness. The index has been released since 2007 and this year it covered a total of 158 countries across the globe. 
The countries were ranked based on 23 indicators, which divided into three factors and the Global Peace Index 2012 was launched on June 12, 2012. 

Internal and External war factors: 
1. Number of external and internal wars fought 
2. Estimated deaths due to external wars 
3. Estimated deaths due to internal wars 
4. Level of organized internal conflict 
5. Relations with neighboring countries

Internal domestic safety and stability factors: 
6. Level of perceived criminality in society 
7. Number of refugees and displaced persons as percentage of population 
8. Political instability 
9. Level of respect for human rights (political terror scale) 
10. Potential for terrorist acts 
11. Number of homicides 
12. Level of violent crime 
13. Likelihood of violent demonstrations 
14. Number of jailed persons 
15. Number of police and security officers

Militarization factors: 
16. Military expenditure as a percentage of GDP 
17. Number of armed services personnel 
18. Imports of major conventional weapons 
19. Exports of major conventional weapons 
20. Funding for UN peacekeeping missions 
21. Number of heavy weapons 
22. Ease of access to small arms and light weapons 
23. Military capability or sophistication

In each indicator the countries will be given with points from 1 to 5. The country with the least points will be ranked as more peaceful, where the countries with the highest points will be ranked as less peaceful. 
Previously, Mongolia with 2.101 points was ranked in 92nd place out of 149 countries in 2010 and with 1.900 points in 58th place in 2011 out of total of 153 countries.
