The International Olympic Committee (IOC) based in Lausanne, Switzerland was established by Baron Pierre de Coubertin on June 23, 1894 with Demetrios Vikelas as its first President, where Pierre de Coubertin served as the 2nd President of the International Olympic Committee in the period of 1896-1925.
On June 23, many states of the world celebrate this day as the Olympic Day. However this year, the Athletes Day of
Mongolia which marks on June 30 coincides with the upcoming 2012 Parliamentary Elections (June 28), it was decided to celebrate the Athletes Day on the same day on Olympic Day.
On June 23, the ceremony to see off the National Team of Mongolia, who to participate in the London Olympics was organized along with the celebration of the Athletes Day and Olympic Day at Sukhbaatar’s Square. The athletes of several generations marched from the Central Sports Palace to Sukhbaatar’s Square opening the ceremony by wreath laying to the
Sukhbaatar’s monument. President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj attended at the ceremony and wished the athletes to participate to show their great performances and best results. Further he mentioned that there was a great opportunity ahead to repeat the Beijing Olympic achievements, on the account Mongolia succeeded over 500 medals from International and World scale competitions within the past four years, whereas 29 athletes received berths for the London Olympics in 7 sports categories and 6 athletes in 4 categories received berths for the Paralympics.
After the greetings President Ts.Elbegdorj handed the Flag of Mongolia to the Deputy Prime Minister and Head of Mongolian National Team, M.Enkhbold, who passed it to the standard-bearer of Mongolia
B.Ser-Od, marathon runner, the Merit Athlete of Mongolia. At the same time, the President of Mongolian
National Olympic Committee D.Zagdsuren introduced the greetings sent by the 8th President of the IOC Count
Jacques Rogge, after which representatives of the National Team, P.Serdamba and M.Bundmaa have taken an oath. The Day was themed as the Open Day of Mongolian Sports, where many events were organized and all sports clubs and committees of the districts and capital city have attended. All day civilians enjoyed the ceremony with Olympic atmosphere.
