Meat export embargo until March 01, 2013
The regular Cabinet meeting was held on July 18, 2012, where the following issues were discussed and resolved.
With the regular Cabinet meeting of July 18, 2012, discussions were made on the winter and spring reports on the agricultural sector and the 2012-2013 winter preparation works. In the last year, a total of 1.2 million tons of hay and 46.8 thousand tons of manufactured forage were prepared, concluding the nationwide winter and spring preparation at 86.6%, which was the highest preparation rate in the history of the nation with the least winter casualties of livestock.
As of the first half of 2012, a total of 275.6 thousand or 0.8% of the total livestock had died, which is lower than the average of many years. Moreover, 14.4 million or 99.0% younglings, including around 300.0 thousand twin younglings, are growing healthy out of the 89.8% healthy births of the total mated livestock. Thus, the total livestock count of Mongolia has reached 50.3 million of heads.
As for spring sowing, out of the total 372.3 thousand hectares, were separately planted 306.1 thousand hectares of crop, 16.1 thousand hectares of potatoes, 7.0 thousand hectares of vegetables, 10.0 thousand hectares of livestock forage, 32.3 thousand hectares of oil plants and 678.0 hectares of fruits and berries.
In the spring of 2012, meat insufficiency and price increase tendencies occurred in Ulaanbaatar and other dense populated cities and localities, due to deficient meat preparation works in the last year. Thus, in order to prepare a sufficient amount of meat for spring 2013, the Head of the General Agency for Specialized Inspection R.Sodkhuu was obliged to set the amount for meat preservation on the scale of Ulaanbaatar and other aimags, and also to limit meat export until March 01, 2013, in order to protect the domestic market and stabilize meat supply.
