Mongolian judoka S.Nyam-Ochir grabbed the first Mongolian medal from the London Olympic Games in the Men's -73 kg category.
S.Nyam-Ochir had a BYE in the first round and was faced against German judoka Christopher Voelk in an elimination round of 32, where he defeated his opponent predominantly with Waza-ari and Yuko scores. In the elimination round of 16 S.Nyam-Ochir had beaten down Ukraine’s Volodymyr Soroka, the Gold and Silver medalist from the European Championship with Yuko score, but lost the next round to Russian Mansur Isaev, the Bronze medalist from World Championship with Ippon score. Yet he showed a great performance in the repachage round winning over Nicholas Delpopolo by Yuko score and made his comeback being qualified to fight for the Bronze medal. Afterwards he defeated the two time Silver medalist from World Championship Dex Elmont from the Netherlands with Yuko score and claimed a Bronze medal. As the London 2012 official website informed that Dex Elmont was lacking in aggression, giving an opening to S.Nyam-Ochir to take charge of the bout.
On July 31, 2012, the Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Preparation Committee for the London Olympic Games S.Batbold congratulated the International Master of Sports Sainjargal NYAM-OCHIR who has successfully wrestled in the Men’s -73 kg category and who has grabbed a Bronze medal and expressed his appreciation to his coaches who have trained him.
Further, the Prime Minister S.Batbold wished success to all Mongolian athletes participating in the Games and voiced his hope that the athletes would further carry out the medal relay and praise the
Mongolian flag in London's sky and melody the Mongolian national anthem many times.
Sainjargal NYAM-OCHIR was born in Tes sum of
Uvs aimag on July 20, 1986. Height 174 cm, weight 73 kg. He has been practicing in judo wrestling since 1998. S.Nyam-Ochir won a Bronze medal in Universidad Games in 2009, Bronze medal in Asian Championship in 2009, 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 6 Bronze medals from the World Cup, Grand Prix and Grand Slam tournaments respectively.
London 2012 is the first Olympic Games for S.Nyam-Ochir. His medal is the
20th Olympic medal for Mongolia since its first participation in 1964, the 11th Olympic Bronze medal and the 6th medal in the Judo contest.
The President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj watched his match and congratulated him with a kiss and wish for more achievements.
