The affiliated official of the Bavarian Society for the Protection of Birds Mr. Ralf Hotzy, who has taken part in organizing the work to send and acclimatize German beavers in Mongolia has been visiting Ulaanbaatar city.
Former Mayor of Ulaanbaatar City G.Munkhbayar who has initiated the idea to introduce the beavers in the Tuul River, has awarded the German biologist with the Ulaanbaatar Honorary Medal on August 07, 2012.
Ralf Hotzy warmly answered reporter’s questions after receiving his medal.
“The results of the project to increase water levels of the Tuul river by introducing beavers won’t be seen in just two or three years of time. The entire work needs more time. The most important matter is if the beavers can successfully adapt to Mongolian climate and create and spread independent populations that can survive and regenerate itself.
I’m here in Mongolia to attend the opening of the information and promotion center for protecting Mazaalai bears or so called Gobi bears. In 2010 during the international conference on protecting the Mazaalai bears the administration of the Gobi strictly protected area B, the Mongolian Conservation Biology Society next to the National University of Mongolia and our organization have signed on a cooperation agreement on establishing the above center. Following our agreement the center’s construction work will start from next week in Ekhiin River valley in Bayankhongor aimag. Our next cooperation activity will be in the forest wood protection sphere. Mongolia is a country with distinctive natural formations and unique nature”, said Ralf Hotzy.
