On December 13, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of Mongolia held its irregular meeting discussing a preliminary weather condition
expected in winter
2012-2013 and measures to take urgently.
According to the weather forecasts, snow is expected to fall more than the multi-year average and temperatures below average, where 70% of the country's territory is already covered with a snow blanket of 200-600 mm particularly in several Sums of Uvs
Aimags, besides in some places the snow cover reached 600-1,200 mm of thickness.
In those territories, the "Zud" or "Dzud"
(severe weather conditions) is expected as the same that happened in the winter of 2009-2010, where over 9 million head of livestock were lost that winter.
Within the irregular meeting, it was resolved to withdraw from the State Reserve Fund 42 million MNT in order to evacuate 907 households of Uvurkhangai aimag to Bulgan and Bayankhongor aimags. Moreover, the Deputy Prime Minister and State Commissioner of NEMA
D.Terbishdagva ordered the affiliated Governors and authorities to provide preparedness and readiness of Emergency Management Service, and strengthen disaster protection capacity and technical supply. If necessary to establish additional rescue units and provide techniques and equipment, and frequently warn locals on weather forecasts.
