The term of prohibiting issuing new special licenses on mineral resources exploration to be extended
The bill initiated by the President of Mongolia on prohibiting to issue new special licenses
on mineral resources exploration was approved by the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia on January 12, 2012 and is due to expire on December 31 of this year.
On December 24, the senior legal advisor to the President Ch.Unurbayar submitted a new bill to the Speaker of the Parliament Z.Enkhbold to make some amendments on the primary bill, in other words to extend the term of prohibition. According to the legal advisor, the President of Mongolia is willing to extend the term.
As of April 2010, 1,096 mining licenses
have been allotted for 478 thousand ha, 3,659 exploration special licenses allotted for 38.9 thousand ha that all together makes 24.5% of the total territory of Mongolia. For instance, 491 special licenses were allocated for about 50% of total territory of Dornogovi
aimag, and 459 special licenses in Umnugovi
aimag that comprises a total of 45% of its total territory.
