GRAMMAR

The vowel length can be divided into 3 groups: short, long and diphtong. It serves to differentiate meanings just as stress does in English.

Short: а, е, ё, и, о, ө, у, ү, э, ю, я
Long: аа, еэ, ёо, ий, оо, өө, ээ, юу, юү, яа
Diphtongs: ай, ой, уй, үй, эй

Stress or Accent
The stress is not marked in Mongolian since it automatically falls on the first syllable. If the word contains long vowels or diphthong, the first such syllable will receive a loud stress. The student is warned that the assented short vowel in Mongolian, i.e. the first syllable of a word in short vowels must be pronounced very short, or else it will be misheard by the natives as a long vowel. Last short vowel is not pronounced.
ex. хол hol far
  хоол hool food
  хоолой hooloi throat
  ав av hunting
  аав aav father
  айлаа ailaa scared
  сан sang fund
  сайн saing good
  санаа sanaa mind
  байна
bain
to be
  явна yavn will go

In Mongolian, a stressed syllable of a loan word is pronounced with a long vowel, and since most of the new loan words from Russian are spelled as they are in Russian, we shall indicate the stress of such word when the Cyrillic spelling is used.

ex. диван
divaan
sofa
  шкаф
shkaaf
cupboard,
wardrobe

  сахар saahar sugar
  кино kinoo movie

Vowel harmony
In Mongolian words the vowels in a non-initial syllable must retain a certain characteristic of the vowel of the initial syllable.

Masculine vowels:: а, о, у
Feminine vowels: э, ө, ү
Neutral: и

The rules of vowel harmony are:
1. A word may not contain both masculine and feminine vowels.
Exception to this rule are the suffixes: "-гүй" (negative) and "-жээ, -чээ" (narrative past) which remain the same for both masculine and feminine vowel words.

ex. явахгүй, гарахгүй, олсонгүй, гараагүй, ирээгүй, ярьсангүй  ярьжээ, уужээ, иджээ.

2. The neutral  "-и"  may follow both masculine and feminine vowels.
ex. өчигдөр, ажил.

Remember:
To start learning Mongolian language you have to memorize  what are the masculine vowels, feminine vowels and a neutral vowel.

BONUS INFORMATION

The history of Mongolian scripts

According to the research and archeological materials found in the territory of Modern Mongolia the Mongolian language speakers were observed by etymology not by phonetic transcription in the year of 425 A.D.

  • There were found small and big transcriptions which small one describes phonetic transcription in the period of Kidan, 925 A.D.
  • Later was composed “Uighur” style script well known today as an “old” style script which fulfilled main role in Mongolian cultural history during several centuries and author of “Uigur” is still remains unknown. But it was used from early periods and thousands of ancient Mongolian historical and cultural chronicles were published in “Uigur” script.
  • In 1269 Mongolian well educated lama (monk) Pagva has composed “Square letter” script ("Дөрвөлжин үсэг") which widespread use was limited to about a hundred years during Yuan Dynasty, and it fell out of use with the advent of the Ming Dynasty. Later on the Soyombo script was created as the fourth Mongolian script by the Mongolian monk and scholar Bogdo Zanabazar in 1686. A special character of the script, the Soyombo symbol, became a national symbol of Mongolia, and has appeared on the national flag since 1921, and on the national coat of arms since 1992, as well as money, stamps, etc.  The Soyombo script was only 38 years after the invention of the Clear script, based mostly on their Uighur ancestors. None of these scripts are used as long as Uighur up today and nowadays, some newspapers and books are printed in Uighur and studied as an old script subject in elementary schools. The Uighur script is a useful source of Mongolian research studies.
  • On February 1, 1941, Mongolia officially adopted the Latin alphabet. Only two months later, on March 25 the decision was reversed again. According to later official claims the system chosen had turned out not to have been thought out well. It was said not to cover all the sounds of the Mongolian language, and to be difficult to use.
  • The Mongolian Cyrillic script is the most recent and official of many writing systems that have been used for Mongolians. It was introduced in the 1946 by the government of Mongolia and the writing system is used for the Khalkha dialect of the Mongolian language as the standard dialect of the modern state of Mongolia.
